Columbia, SC – Thanks to the incredible generosity of the viewers and businesses from across the Midlands, WIS-TV and Alpha Media Radio in Columbia, South Carolina were able to raise $736,101 for the Red Cross and their disaster relief efforts in South Carolina.
Over the weekend, historic rains drenched the Midlands of South Carolina dropping as much as two feet of rain in many places causing rivers and streams to flood displacing thousands of South Carolinians from their homes.
"As we woke up Sunday morning we began to realize the magnitude of the destruction that we were facing." said Lyle Schulze, Vice President and General Manager of WIS-TV. "It's numbing to look at the TV screen and see the homes of our friends and families destroyed. We knew we had to do something. WIS has been a part of the Midlands for over 60 years and it's our responsibility to help our neighbors any way we can."
The phone calls started coming in around 6:00 AM Wednesday morning and by 7:00 PM that night it was apparent the desire to give was overwhelming, so the telethon was extended a second day. Staffed by volunteers from the Red Cross the operators not only took donations but they were able to give out valuable information about shelters and relief efforts to callers, as well.
"This is exactly what we believe Raycom Media and local TV should be about," said Paul McTear, President and CEO of Raycom Media. "We are proud to be part of our communities, and I'm proud of how WIS-TV worked to help the people of South Carolina in this time of need."
